Public transport in Debrecen is operated by DKV (Debreceni Közlekedési Vállalat) — Debrecen Transport Company. The network consists of tram and bus lines covering the city and suburban areas.
Tram System
Debrecen has a tram network with several lines connecting major districts:
- Tram 1: Main line running through city center, connecting residential areas
- Tram 2: Secondary line serving university area and Nagyerdő park
- Additional tram routes: Serve eastern and western districts
The historic tram system dates back to 1884 (originally steam-powered), making Debrecen the first Hungarian city with a tramway.
Bus Network
Extensive bus routes complement the tram system, serving:
- Residential neighborhoods not covered by trams
- Suburban villages and nearby towns
- University campus and student dormitories
- Hospital and medical facilities
- Shopping centers (Forum Debrecen, etc.)
Night buses operate on limited routes after regular services end.
Ticket Types
DKV offers various ticket options:
- Single ticket (Vonaljegy): One journey, validate on boarding
- Transfer ticket: Multiple transfers within 90 minutes
- 10-trip ticket book: Discounted bulk tickets
- Daily pass: 24-hour unlimited travel
- 3-day pass: Tourist option for extended stays
- Weekly pass: 7 consecutive days
- Monthly pass (Bérlet): Calendar month unlimited travel — best value for residents

- Senior passes: Free or reduced fare for Hungarian residents over 65
How to Buy
Purchase tickets at:
- DKV customer centers — main office near city center, major stops
- Ticket vending machines — at tram stops and major bus stations
- Mobile app — DKV’s official app for digital tickets (Android/iOS)
- Newsagents and kiosks — look for “Jegy” or “Jegypénztár” signs
- On-board from driver — possible but may be limited or more expensive
Validation
Important: Validate your ticket immediately when boarding:
- Trams: Use orange validation boxes on board
- Buses: Validate near the entrance doors
- Pre-validated passes: Monthly passes are pre-validated for the entire month
Ticket inspectors check regularly. Traveling without a valid ticket results in significant on-the-spot fines (several thousand HUF).
